Herbal Scalp Tonic

What's in my homemade herbal scalp tonic?

I use this tonic to drench my scalp before washing. First I massage for 5 minutes then spritz the tonic over my entire head and allow the follicles to open. After approximately an hour, I do a second spritzing of the scalp and allow it to soak in for another hour. I then shampoo and condition as usual.

When the roots are barely damp from air drying I apply the tonic once again. This time I allow it to stay on without rinsing.

I have saved some of the tonic which I will use during the course of the week.

Biotin: Negative Side Effects

When I just learned of biotin, I was eager to try it but not before doing extensive research. Many of the material I read only made mention of the break outs that it could cause if you did not drink enough water.

This is my own experience with the supplement. I took 5000mcg of biotin for several months. In the first instance, I noticed that it made me urinate a lot more often than usual. After a while things went back to normal. I also noticed that during this time a small patch of new hairs that I did not even miss, was growing in at the front section of my scalp. However, when I increased the dosage of biotin to 8000mcg (because I was getting 3000mcg from my daily multivitamin) something strange happened. One morning when I tried to raise up my upper body to get up out of bed, I had a severe pain in my lower back that made it woefully difficult for me to even shuffle my way out of bed or even sit up. I surmised it may have been the biotin so I stopped taking it for a while and I was myself again. However, I decided to try it again since I was not quite convinced that this could have been the reason; furthermore, I had visited my GP (Doctor) and he said that the biotin could not have been responsible for a pain that appeared to be a muscle pain so I resumed with the same dosage of biotin (5000mcg and 3000mcg from multivitamin), for a while a thought I was living a de ja vu. The very same thing happened again and so I was convinced that the high dosage could have been responsible for this odd pain.

I am still taking biotin, but only through multivitamin.

Hair Typing

To categorise afro textured hair is to categorise finger prints. Each individual has their own unique strand features. There are several kinky, coily hair patterns but they all present different weights and textures. Below is a comparison of Nappy Textures and Styling Techniques. I Eat What I Put on My Hair

A part of being natural also involves what you take into your body because in every and any case, what you put in is what you will get out.
This is a mixture of Aloe, garlic and honey. This has been a part of my diet even before I decided to go back to my natural texture, but I have now increased the amount. I also use aloe vera (single bible) a lot on my hair.

Does Make Up & Natural Hair go hand in hand

Fact or Myth?
Wearing natural hair appears to add at least five more years to one's features. If this is a myth, then why are so many naturals developing such an appetite for make up? and if this is the fact, why can't we embrace our own features? There are of course, occasions that warrant a facial transformation, but having a daily make up routine or being unable to
step out
without a made up face calls for a reexamination of what natural truly is. I have observed in my area, many reconverted naturals who did not careless about wearing make up, once they had been reunited with their original texture have turned to it to highlight their physical beauty. While, I am not judging anyone, I just wondered if there was a correlation between the two " Make up - Natural" and if there was in fact, something that I was missing out on.

Neem & Water only Hair Wash

I have not been very experimental with my hair, but I wanted to try something new and natural after hearing about the harmful chemicals in shampoos so I decided to try Neem; yes Neem. The Neem tree grows wildly in my backyard and so I have easy access. Neem is also present in abundance in Jamaica as it is used as a shade tree but many of us are now only learning about its versatility. So I pick a branch of the Neem, as I said, from my back yard along with peppermint and three limes(which I also cultivate in my backyard). I allow the Neem to come to a rapid boil and add the peppermint as soon as I remove it from the flame then I squeeze the lime juice into the water. I allow it to cool down and use the mixture as warm as I can bear it. I use it warm since I would need something to break up the grease and other products in my hair. And the results! At the first attempt,my usually coarse, dry hair was a lot softer than it usually was but as I continued I have noticed that it is even softer and more manageable. I think I will be using a sulphate free shampoo every now and then, but my Neem concoction is definitely a main stay for my natural hair
